Power line safety solutions with electrical cable insulation for homes, trades & construction sites in Dunedin and across Otago

When you’re carrying out exterior renovations, scaffolding work, roofing, painting or maintenance near overhead power lines, safety must come first. Tiger Tails Otago provides a safe, practical and cost-effective way to work around overhead lines using industry-approved overhead power line covers and sleeves. These protective line wraps act as both a visual warning and a temporary insulating barrier, helping you maintain the safe distances required without the cost or disruption of shutting off power.
Based in Dunedin and working across Otago (to Wanaka and Queenstown, and beyond when required), we specialise in assessing sites, installing high-quality line wraps and electrical wire insulation on a cost per install and additional rental time as required, and removing everything once work is complete. Our solutions are relied on by homeowners, tradespeople and construction companies who need to keep people, property and equipment safe.

After installation, an Electrical Certificate of Compliance will be issued. Please keep this document as it certifies our work. Tiger Tails Otago works alongside Delta to manage any power disconnections and reconnections required while the electrical wire insulation is being installed.

Frequently asked questions

If you are carrying out exterior maintenance work around your home, and are likely to come into contact with high voltage transmission lines, you must maintain a safe distance of at least 4m from overhead lines.

If you are undertaking work where you need to get closer than 4m to live overhead lines, you have a couple of options. You can either contact Aurora Energy and fill out their Overhead Line Close Approach Request Form and ensure you meet their criteria. You can arrange to get the power disconnected during the work. Alternatively, we can install protective line wraps and tiger tails to ensure high-voltage power line insulation. This service is cost-effective and efficient to carry out.

Our overhead power line covers are mostly installed for scaffolding companies. However, we also work with individual tradespeople, throughout Otago, who carry out painting, roof work, exterior building work and tree work. If you would like us to install electrical wire insulation at your site, simply contact Tiger Tails Otago with your enquiry.

We can usually get the line covers installed within a couple of days of your request. We'll let you know if there will be any issues. We can install the covers in most weather conditions, except when it might be unsafe to be working at height.

We initially install the power line covers for six weeks. If your project takes longer than that you can extend the rental on a week-by-week basis.

Power line wraps and tiger tails are designed to be put on lines where they come into a property. So if you are working on scaffolding near the property for example painting or roofing, they can be used. If you are working further away from the property, closer to the road - for example trimming hedges or trees, then you will need to contact Aurora, the energy provider, to discuss your job.
